Sylvia Wallinger

Born on April 14, 1948, in Wörgl; attended school in Innsbruck and Salzburg.

Studied psychology, philosophy, education, German language and literature, linguistics, and history in Innsbruck, Graz, Vienna, and Los Angeles.

I financed my university studies independently as a working student and scholarship recipient—an experience that gave me personal independence as well as valuable practical knowledge and life experience.

During my studies, I held a wide variety of jobs: I worked as an office clerk for a flooring company, a telephone operator for the Austrian Postal Service, a street interviewer for a Viennese market research institute, and a cultural guide at Ambras Castle near Innsbruck. I also worked as a housekeeper in Zurich, a kitchen maid in Bognor Regis in southern England, a model for theatre and art schools, a childcare worker at the Innsbruck Clinic for Child Psychiatry, a bakery sales assistant in Graz, a flyer distributor on Vienna’s Kärntner Straße, and a teaching assistant in Innsbruck and Vienna, as well as at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

In addition, I volunteered at art galleries in Innsbruck and Vienna and was involved with various student organizations in both cities.

In 1972–73, following a stay in New York, I received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Los Angeles. After earning my doctorate in 1974, I was awarded a grant by the City of Vienna, which enabled me to repay a student loan.

Following another stay in the United States, I began my full-time professional career in early 1975, at the age of 26.
